Ubuntu 8.4

I have got a new CD for Ubuntu 8.4 but am wondering how to install the latest JDK on it.I want to program java on linux platforms and and absolutely new to linux,so am not at all versed with linux commands.Please help me get the java environment and help me with varuous commands.I know i have to start from stratch!:)

so i need to enable the multiverse repo to install open JDK and it will be installed automatically?
have i to go to sun.java.com and download the .bin file and do something to it?
