ok here's what I know: .deb files I have a manager for, .tar will work but I have to "configure it" or something, what about .tar? is there a comprehensive list somewhere? and audio files are in another class altogether but what I'm doing is looking to download a book (on python) and they are offering .tar. will this open and be printable to paper?
Am I asking all the right questions?

tar should open with Ubuntu's archive manager (installed by default)

.tar is an archive same as .zip or .rar for Windows. Whether or not you can print it depends on what's inside.
