I thought of some how "simplifying" my Ubuntu (8.04 to be exact).
Decided to make the panel to not take the full width of the screen but I have a problem with the "handlers" on the side (check the screenshot) - I don't know how to remove them. They kind of get in the way when I make the panel at 0% opacity. Those handlers remain 100% visible.

By the way, maybe I could customize my panels so they look better?
I don't want some full theme software, I just want to customize ONLY the panels.

My guess is that you can't remove them as they are the only spot on the compressed panel where you can right-click and change the panel prefs?!

Yep, that is true. Oh well, I'm going to expand it fully then.

I'll mark it as solved (if I'll find how).

EDIT: can't find :( help.

I understand your feeling very well. That was the reason why I jumped from AWN (to Panel to AWN to Panel) because AWN do not have that handlers. As far as I know (normal user), there is no way around.

Have you tried changing the background color to be transparent,? That way it will not show up at least.

Yes, but the handlers are still 0% transparent. No big deal.

So, how do I mark it to "solved"?

Under 'Thread Tools' right above your first post.
