View Full Version : [ubuntu] [SOLVED] Evolution doesn't display email images properly

I'm having some problem with Evolution not displaying images properly; most images eem to display ok, but others either don't display at all, or they are all jumbled around the page (see attached image)

does anyone know how to correct this

UPDATE: I've marked this thread as Solved despite that not being the case; I've simply given up on Evolution as a suitable/comparable replacement for MS Outlook - I have Thunderbird handling my email instead, and have to manually update my iPaq & Nokia phone - I hope that at some stage in the future the Gnome/Evolution team get it to work at least as well as MS Outlook.

How is the jumbled e-mail formatted? How does the header claim it's formatted?
HTML (tags only)? Real HTML (with <html></html> and head and body tags)? RTF? Just a series of attached images?

What's the range of image sizes? Are they all attached, or are some just links?

I'll have to wait till the next email message cause I nuked that one.

How do you view email source / formatting etc in Evolution?

This is some semi-junk mail that comes in, the code below is the HTML of the email.

The 4 images in the table don't display; there is one image in the email not in a table (it's just in the main body), and that displays ok.

I get other emails that have images in a table that display fine, so it's just some emails that don't display their images.

I've masked my email & server address and in the code below with asterisks.

Has this ever been solved? I have the exact same issue and beating my head against the wall chasing it. One thing that I noticed is that the email source that I looked at was also trying to pull images from aj.600z.com.

Nah, problem is still there.

To be honest, I'm not that impressed with Evolution as a replacement for MS Outlook, it just doesn't compare well. For one, it doesn't save replies in the same folders as the received email, and I get tons of email each day with my 3 business's and other non-profit work, so I have to manually move emails from 'sent' to the relavent inbox folder.

I also wanted something comparable so I could sync with my Nokia phone and HP iPaq, but that doesn't do it anyhow.

I don't like Kontact, so I'm currently setting up/migrating to Thunderbird, and adding a few extensions to it - email with calender and tasks; just hope I can find a way to sync with it. I can also apply some of the same themes as my Firefox browser.

I'm also toying with 'Spicebird' which is a derivative of Thunderbird, but with Outlook features - but it's still beta, so I might move to that later when it's full featured.

I did find something out about it. I took a look in /home/user/.evolution/cache/http , cleared it out and loaded images from one email that I knew was not working. When I look at the fresh stuff in the cache, some of it was corrupt. Seems to be some interpreter problem. One thing that was really interesting is that the first email that I looked at used the same domain as the example you put up, but after checking a few more emails, there were other domains that didn't work. Seems to be when a 3rd party link is in a table. Don't know if that points you in any direction.

As far as the sent mail problem, you can create a message filter that will move the emails when you send them. Use Sender Contains "your email address" then move a copy to whatever Sent folder that you want. It will still put a message in the main sent folder but you can set up some other "sent" folders that indicate which account you sent them from.

If I find answers to your other problems I will let you know. I didn't hook up my Ipaq yet, which is on the list of things to do.......I can't believe that we are the only two people having this problem but I'll handle this hemisphere if you'll handle that one.......

I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but my images weren't showing up in messages in Evolution either. I went to Edit > Preferences > Mail Preferences > HTML messages, and I changed the settings under Loading Images.

That solved it for me. Maybe this helped?

gaitch32;
thanks; I figured out the rules for moving incoming emails, but I have a lot of different accounts to check (from 36 domains) and most mail is manually deleted, junked or dragged into it's relevant subfolder, so I don't want to create a rules for each reply email so it saves in the relevant folder as well (just tick a box in Outlook settings to save replies in same folder)

Also the rules don't have an option for auto-responding to certain emails. These things seem to be adressed in 'Thunderbird', so I'm setting up some other accounts in that to check it's features out before moving everything.

Thunderdan;
thanks, but it's already set to 'Always load images from the Internet', but not all images display.

If I download the same emails with 'Thunderbird' or 'Spicebird', then all images display fine, so it's a Evolution problem.

Ya, I have the same problem as charonred. I have them enabled but only some of them show up with question marks in the places where the missing ones should be.

Still working on it.......

I gave up on Evolution - sadly, it just doesn't compare to Outlook.

And as I can't get 'Multi-sync' to work with my 2002 HP iPaq 5450, nor my Nokia 6233 phone, there's no advantage to Evolution anyhow - I'll just have to manually update my iPaq and Nokia (damn) :(

So, I've moved to Thunderbird with some added extensions - works nice, displays images, saves replies in same folder as received message etc, and I have it themed the same as Firefox :)

I have egroupware running on a webserver (in a datacenter) to which i sync with syncevolution.

Both my PDA & my Smartphone also sync to this server, it works great.

thanks, but that was one of the first things I checked - it still doesn't display all images in some messages - not had a problem with Thunderbird.

Is there anyway to get a HP iPaq 5450 to sync with Thunderbird, or similar (I'll look at evolution again when there's a newer version)

I can browse my Nokia 6233, but it won't sync either. It's a couple of years old now, so I'm looking at updating it; any suggestions on Linux compatible phones

I don't know how this problem can be marked as solved. It doesn't sound like it. I too have problems with images in Evolution. And the first thing I did when I set up Evolution was to make sure it loaded images/html. This didn't work. I was wondering if it could be a problem with restricted codices.

Have you confirmed that the actual images in the messages in question are viewable/loadable with another email program or a web-browser. If the problem is intermittent, the actual image resource on the web may have moved or be otherwise broken, in which case another application would also not be able to view/load it.

It's true this just doesn't work. I tried it and it worked for perhaps one opening and then not. Checked back and the setting had not reverted ie was still "Always Load Image"
Still, just living with it .

The problem is that there are no standards for HTML e-mail, and when MS decide that some horrible kludge works ok for their e-mail client & browser, well if it doesn't work for other then bad luck.

Other vendors just bow to the wishes of MS and grudgingly try to make their products work, those that stick to whatever standards that there are get complaints from people that don't understand what is going on.

As a prime example, I receive report e-mails from MS SBS 2003 servers that display correctly in Evolution, but the same reports from SBS 2008 systems don't because Microsoft decided to add more "eye-candy" that only renders correctly in their products.
