http://knol.google.com
I've been using it a bit, but there are disadvantages:
a) Many articles per one subject. Which one do I choose?
b) Articles can be biased. Just look at the first result for the Microsoft article.
And the advantages:
a) Articles are more or less static.
b) We have people behind the articles.

I personally think that it's good, but it doesn't compete with Wikipedia.

It has a different purpose. Wikipedia is a freely-editable encyclopedia. Knol is a collection of articles by knowledgable people on different topics. The topics can be recipes, instructions, or just about anything.

Never heard of it, but it seems like it would be useful.
