Usually, light coloured. White is a good choice.

The important thing is contrast. My site doesn't have enough contrast, but the average person wouldn't think that by looking at it.

CYAN is the bees knees.

Seriously though, there is no "best" colour. Pick one that is non intrusive and flows well with your colour scheme. If you need help picking colors, then I recommend using a web based tool like

http://kuler.adobe.com/

or

http://colorblender.com/

Good Luck!

Edit: Make sure you disable Adblock when going to kuler.adobe.com

Well, IMHO avoid bright colors. Saturation should be around 50%. Shades of green and blue are pleasing to the eye. Shades of red, brown are energetic.
Gray as the base is a nice option too.

Take a look at wordpress themes.

And ofcourse, there is Css Zen Garden!

I like black as a back ground colour but i guess that is just me.

There is a reason why most of them are white though.

I agree, But then why do all these websites use white... Google. Facebook. ?? the list is pretty endless.

I think colors other then white tend to stand out more.

I say, either white or off-white. Cream or beige will do. I prefer to read black text on a white page. Anything else is risky. If I like something, but others don't, people will say that it is unreadable. (I am thinking of the Pink Ponies melodrama.) Slight changes on the black and white theme.

I always pick a very light or very dark colour and use this (http://www.colorsontheweb.com/colorwizard.asp) site to match other colours.

Light coloured. I usually use grey or white.

Install agave for a great color app.

White is a safe background if you want a professional site. If your artistic skills are good enough, you might be able to devise a scheme that involves a different color.

Also, always specify both the foreground and background color, or neither. Otherwise, your site might become unreadable for users who, for whatever reason, set their browser's default color to something other than black on white. (A number of sites--including some of Google--violate this rule.) If nothing else, this CSS will do the trick without any harmful side-effects:
body {
color: black;
background: white;
}It's amazing how many sites don't do something so simple.

Depends. If the entire look and feel has a particular theme you stick with what goes well with the theme.

However for general readability you'd want to stay away from heavily saturated tones. Virtually all others can be used; what matters is the combination of text, pictures and background.

For example using white as #FFFFFF; will make your page very awkward in badly lit environments; using #000000; + bright text colours will be if possible even worse. (Because the end user can't solve it by tuning the brightness of his/her screen.) EDIT: Note that the trick is usually in slight adjustments. Particularly high values of Green can be annoying; but equal measures of Blue tends to come across as less bright -- therefore lowering the Green and raising the Blue whilst overall lowering the saturation can yield good effects which look only subtly different from the 'typical' ones. But far more comfortable.

Incidentally: the Ubuntu forums get pretty agressive colour-wise late at night. ;)

*Bump*

It was an hour since your last post, there's no need for the bump.

Furthermore, this forum is for programmers, not designers. Most websites designed by programmers are eyesores. I feel your question would be answered better in the Art & Design (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=16) forum.

I think either a light color, or a dark color. I.e. just off white, or a dark gray.

The websites people have mentioned look promising though :)

Maybe we should move this to the Art & Design forum?
