Burn the downloaded 8.04 as an iso, once that is done insert the 8.04 cd when running windows, it should give you the option to install it I believe.

sorry, it is the 8.04.1,
this .1 does it make a difference? & what is the wbi for, i thought it installs through win xp the 8.04.1? nick

No thats ok 8.04.1 is the update - ther are 2 types of wubi - the one you can download on it's own and the one that is on the 8.04.1 disc.
If you install with the small wubi standalone file it will go on line to download the rest of the os; you already have it - so if you run the cd, once it's burnt as an iso - it should give you the wubi install.

I did the iso on a dvd (694MB), reinserted the disk but nothing happened, then doubleclicked the iso & it goes in to Nero for another burn.
How do I run that iso to install 8.04.1? nick

Did you burn it aas an iso or image - if you burned it as data it's no good. If the disc is burnt properly then, assuming you have autorun on then it will load and ask - I haven't actually run it myself as I don't have windows :)
If you haven't got autorun - open it from the file manager - you should see wubi on the disc, double click it.
Here are thelinks for the wubi wiki and forum, which will probably come in handy over the next few days -

IT IS ISO "ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386.iso".
I run wbi separately, it says instally 8.04, retrieving install files, then it says connect to the net.
Well I am permanently on broadband.
What next? nick

lo & behold, dispite all failures encountered on last posts, I discovered in one Win partition an Ubuntu directory, & its file "curl_log.txt" mentions ubuntu 8.04.
How did it install I'll never know now.
Alas though, when I rebooted & selected te first boot option, Ubuntu started loading but asks for a name & password that I do not know as I was never given the chance to install it & enter a name or password.
What the hell do I do next. I feel my only option is undelete all & forget perishing linux.

thanks again Forest.... but wbi could not download it as it could not see that I am permanently on broadband, & asked to go on line.
But how on earth did it install, & why the password request.
Anyway is getting late & getting me nowhere, so I declare this UNsolved & terminal, I am done.
