Focus Problems?

hello to all, i am having some serious yet annoying as can be problems with ubuntu at the moment. sometimes while using firefox my mouse can't click on anything but my keyboard can control only 1 window. i can't even switch windows. I have no clue what the problem is but even compiz fusion does not render the rain and snow effects until i switch the cube around. This updates the screen a frame at a time. Does anyone know the cause of this?
EDIT: fonts and windows on the entire screen randomly blurr and i need to move a window over them to refresh the fonts.
