Relatively new to ubuntu. I do have a couple of questions that are outstanding, and I have seen 'bump' in the odd posting.

I'm assuming that this is supposed to do something. Could someone please explain what it does, and what are the rules? Some editorial comment, particularly around whether it works or not, would also be helpful.

Thanks

Bumping is posting on a thread to bring the thread up on the list so it get more attention. Bumping is usually discouraged, but since this forum is so busy, we allow bumping for threads if they don't get responses in 24-48 hours.

I was curious if the following thread violates forum bumping policy as explained by LaRoza and if it would be appropriate for a forum member to report this post:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=896956

Thanks!

You could report it if you'd like, but giving him a gentle reminder to be patient would also be appropriate. Just don't be rude about it.

Hello,

I was wondering about the "syntax" for the bump "command".

1. Does capitalization matter?
2. Does punctuation following it matter?
3. Can the post have content other than just the bump?
4. Do words containing "bump" trigger the command? (As in bumping, bumped, bumper, bumps)
5. If #4 is "Yes," does that mean that this thread is getting bumped several times by this post? (Note: I really hope this last one is not the case! Sorry in advance if it is.)

Thanks,

it is not a command, it is the act of posting at all that "bumps" it to the top

Okay, I know that it is not a "command" in the traditional sense of the word. But if posting at all bumps it to the top, then how is a "bumped" thread distinguished from an "answered" thread? I mean, wouldn't one bumped thread easily get "buried" under many answered threads?

Thanks for your help,

By the content. A bump typically is a one word "bump" or "to the top" or some such, whereas a valid post contributes information.

All a bump is is a normal post whose only purpose it to move the thread to the top of the listing. It doesn't do anything special that any other post wouldn't do.

wouldn't one bumped thread easily get "buried" under many answered threads?Yes, it would, which is why many people have to bump again, and there is a limit to how much bumping you should do in a thread.

other ways people bump are making posts like:

Anyone?

Surely I am not the only one with this problem...

Still having this issue...

posting a random smiley...
