Looking into this issue again.

When the GNOME panels are in unexpanded mode, if I log out and log back in the top panel is moved to the bottom and the bottom panel is moved to the top. The icons on the panel are moved out of position.

This issue has been discussed in a few other threads. There have been some work-arounds discussed using gconf-editor. None of them have worked for me yet.

If anyone can provide some details about settings in gconf-editor that will make the panels stick, I know that a lot of us would appreciate it.

What we'd appreciate even more is if this problem could be fixed in Ubuntu once and for all. The problem doesn't exist in Debian Etch's GNOME, but in Mint (which is based on Ubuntu) the situation is similar.
