I'm trying Xubuntu because I heard it is designed to be the minimal desktop ubuntu.

So now I've installed it into VirtualBox, but I find that it actually has quite a lot of stuff. It has games, IM, etc.

I was expecting a minimal installation and then I would go and add the few things I needed (eg. web browser).

Do I have the wrong distro? Is there a minimal distro with just the basics? Is there a script for automatically removing all the non-core stuff?

Thanks.

Xubuntu is a great minimal-with-GUI-and-bells-and-whistles system.

No script to uninstall the bloat, since my bloat is different from your bloat. Just go into Synaptic and start poking at packages to see what you don't want (games, apps, tracker, desktop panels, Gnome dependent apps, etc...)

Or install with the cli option, then install gdm and xfce4

You were misinformed about exactly what Xubuntu's goals are. :)
It's designed to be as close-as-possible to Ubuntu but for those who 1) have slightly older computers, or 2) prefer an Xfce desktop to Gnome.

Here is a good tutorial on a real minimal installation: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/minimal#barebones

ps This page will tell you how to remove Xubuntu: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/puregnome
