I need to install a downloaded package that comes with an install script (IDL7.0). Ideally, where should such packages be installed? in bin/usr? elsewhere? Sorry for the very newbish question and thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for your reply. I now have found additional install information on their web. They say to put it in /usr/local/itt. There are many helpful sites that explain how to manually install packages, but it's never been very clear to me where people put them. I guess there isn't really a fixed way of doing things(?).

You can install a tar.gz anywhere you like, it just good practice to have a location for all apps/sources
