What are M4A files?
I found some in my music.
Such as "/media/Vista/My Music/Music/F00/AWBZ.m4a"

It's likely to be AAC audio in a MPEG-4 container.
Use file to find out what files are.

Nevermind, I think I found it.
It says "iTunes v7.6.0.29, QuickTime 7.4"

The very useful command-line program called file.

It says "iTunes v7.6.0.29, QuickTime 7.4"
Based on that, that'll be AAC in MPEG-4.
By the way, the extension provides a clue. m4a usually means MPEG-4 audio (extensions can easily be falsified).
