This is just a simple guide on how to install DOOM 3 in Ubuntu (GNOME Desktop environment). This guide was written for the average user who hates the terminal. Terminal users can easily adapt this to use in the terminal.
If I made errors or if you have troubles just post and I will try to help.
Open up your internet browser of choice.
Go to this URL : ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/doom3/linux/
Download the latest DOOM 3 file (doom3-linux-1.3.1.1304.x86.run at time of writing)
Open up Terminal or Konsole or whatever you may use.
Type 'cd ~/Desktop' or wherever you have downloaded your file
Now type 'dir' and see if the DOOM 3 file appears.
If it does then type 'sudo sh doom3-linux-x.x.x.x.x86.run' replace the x's with the version numbers
Now the installer will load
Accept the license agreement if you dare
Continue on until it asks for the install path
When it asks for the install path replace the default with '/home/<username>/doom3'
In the next field, the link field, replace the default with '/home/<username>/
If you plan to play online go ahead and click 'Install PunkBuster'
Click 'Begin Install'
Once the install is complete get your DOOM 3 CD's ready
Place CD #1 in your drive
NOTE : You may want to run nautilus as root if you do not know how to do this through the terminal. To do that open a terminal and type 'gksudo nautilus'
Open up the CD in Nautilus.
Go to the cd directory '/Setup/Data/base/'
Right click the file 'pak002.pk4' and select 'Copy...'
Paste this file in your '~/doom3/base/' directory
Eject CD #1
Place Cd #2 in your drive
Go to the cd directory '/Setup/Data/base/' and copy all the files to '~/doom3/base/' and do the game process for CD #3
Eject CD 3 and play DOOM 3
I HAVE CREATED A GUIDE AND SOME SCRIPTS FOR INSTALLING THIS EASILY ON MY SITE HERE (http://sites.google.com/site/linuxguymarshall/doom-3)

Q.Can I play with Windows, OS X users?
A.Yes, we just did this at a LAN party the other day
Q.How can I update?

For some reason I got two doom3 shortcuts in my Applications->Games.
Both have exactly same name. Which one to use?
Edit: Another was for some "dedicated" thing. What is that?
And now when I type in my serial, it refuses it!! What now? :P

But it refuses my serial :O My doom version is 1.3.1.1304
Edit: Installed 1.1 linux client. It doesn't even ask the serial. :)

Nice tutorial,
I think I got it all working with the exception of the video. The problem is I'm using a cheap wide-screen monitor. My settings are currently:
1440x900@50Hz
When doom3 starts the screen states "Unable to Display Frequency". I can hear the heart beat, I'm sure it's working but I need to be able to specify the resolution and frequency at the command line.
any ideas?

I have the same problem with my HDTV in my room. The problem is that your widescreen monitor (16:9) is not going to be able to play DOOM (4:3) without some tweaks.
Check out
/home/[your username]/doom3/base/
and find the 'DoomConfig.cfg' file. Find where it says "Fullscreen" or something like that. It will be a 1 or a 0. Change it to the opposite one then run doom 3. It will start in windowed mode but change your settings to widescreen there. Or try and find a "widescreen" or "resolution" setting. I would help more but im on a WinBlows machine ATM and I don't think the config files are the same.

Thanks man thats just what I was looking for.
Once I got it into windowed mode I referenced this site on how to set it up for widescreen.
http://doom.freakygaming.com/pc/action/doom_3/tutorials/running_doom_3_in_widescreen.html
it's pretty simple. The only thing that wasn't clear is that all the "commands he was talking about had to be intered through the doom 3 console. press the key with the "`" and "~" on it to get the console once the game starts.

Do they have anything in common? A particular 3D model? Shader? Does it crash at the same point every time?

your scripts are confusing and don't seem to work
i extracted it to my desktop
ran script 1, it downloaded some file, then asked me to enter my password, i did, and then it asked me to put in disk 1
then it just asked me to put in disk 2 without doing anything, and then i put in disk 2 and it just keeps asking for it...

You could run it in a terminal.

It probably means that your disc drives are not where I set them to be. Just change the drive location in the script

Ok, this time I ran it in a terminal piping the output of that terminal to a file. This time it failed in almost exactly the same spot. I don't know what it's called but when starting the game it's a hallway where the lights turn off and walls on the right blink and beep. you go to the end and turn left and there is a stairway up with a single swinging light. some monsters come out at this time and it's right around here where the system freezes. The ONLY way I've been able to get out is Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and restart X. Here is the log file.

It probably means that your disc drives are not where I set them to be. Just change the drive location in the script
and how do you do this? the script never asks for a drive location. not to mention my dvd drive is at the default place, /dev/sdc0

I'd suggest writing an installer script like my Quake 4 installer (http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=189064) ;)
/dev/sdc0
That is the device. It is *not* a mount point. Mount points should be in /mnt/ or /media/. You will probably have a default entry for it in /etc/fstab.

I dont have time now but I will give it a look in a few minutes

The script should not ask for a location. All the script is is a set of commands for the terminal open it up in vim (or gedit, loser) and edit the script. It's released under the MIT License so rip it up and redistribute if you want.

This has nothing to do with the actual installation of doom 3. However since I used the files you specifyed I want to make it compatible with any and all changes made by them (if it matters). After setup of doom 3 everything runs fine, however after downloading "Last Man Standing 4.0" mod and unziping to the doom 3 directory then booting doom it's rejecting the mod it will close out doom and act like it's trying to restart but then just dies. I'm not even sure where to begin on why it doesn't work as you yourself said in your post mods work with it...
Also like to mention on launcher it put my doom 3 in "Other" and there ARE 2 icons for it however one doesn't work (assuming its the dedicated server which I don't care about).
Using ubuntu hardy if that makes a difference cards all installed nvidia high enough to run doom 3 so thats not it. All I can figure is it's and issue between the doom 3 setup from those files vs and the mod itself (as I've always noticed the mod had issues even on winblows) between crashing and such.

Anyone have problems with the serial? Everytime I use the serial, it states that it is an invalid serial ...

The serial is sent via doom 3 program itself to id softwares key server. Yours won't work due to it's not a store bought doom 3. You probably downloaded a copy of doom 3 trial and want to unlock it or some other such thing. If it's a valid key off your jewel case or a copy bought online insure the key is correct case sensitive blah blah blah. Other things I could suggest before thinking to hard is insure you followed the steps in the tutorial given by this nice kid to the letter. Personally I did it by hand without the shell scripts he wrote. Try that stuff and let me know what happens. Also make sure your connected to the internet when you fire off the key.
