This is a rather creative use of the free nature of Ubuntu to make a book sale that much sweeter—free upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10 (http://www.ubuntuproductivity.com/journal/humor/08/2008/free-upgrade-to-ubuntu-810/).

But does it seem slimy somehow?

Well if you can't burn and/or download CD's then this might be a really nice offer. Because as cheap as Internet and burning free ISO's may seem, it's still not cheap as free. :)

Oh, right, I get it now... that would be awesome (and much in the Ubuntu spirit) if they did.

You made me curious (I had never thought that they might actually be giving away an 8.10 DVD) so I used their online support form and inquired what their "upgrade kit" consisted of. Their kind & very responsive technical support people pointed me to this url: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/purchase

It seems their free upgrade is the "Request free CDs" link at Ubuntu's site.

I hope they are pointing out the very important thought that one should download it if at all possible, or they are contributing to the free CD shipping...
Otherwise that would be quite rude to point people to get free CDs shipped at Canonical's expense.

Then again, the Ubuntu web site is doing that just fine, so as long as the link is to there and not the actual free CD page, I guess it's fair enough.
