I have been excited for some time now, about the idea of purchasing an ultra portable with Ubuntu pre-installed on it. Ubuntu Remix is supposed to target this market, optimized for the Intel Atom processor. I have been drooling over systems like the Eee PC and other competing products that have been popping up all over, loaded with some bizarre Linux flavor.

So my question is... where the heck is Ubuntu/remix/MID????

I have seen a lot of news articles like this (http://www.tectonic.co.za/?p=2437) or this (http://www.ubuntu.com/news/netbook-remix) talking about Remix being released early this summer, but I only see it available as a source release (I.E.: I have to compile it myself on my ultra-portable of choice and pray!) In this booming market, where the heck is Ubuntu ultra-portables???? Even Circuit City has a Eee PC look-a-like loaded with Linux for crying out loud!!!

Please, someone with a little more knowledge, and possibly less single malt scotch in their blood, educate me! Did Mr. Shuttleworth miss the boat on this one somehow?

I got the netbook remix on an eeePC 4gb by following this instructions. (http://wiki.eeeuser.com/ubuntu_netbook_remix)

Thanks for the link, but is this not just a theme? I was under the impression that Ubuntu Remix was a rewrite to make it faster and use less power for small laptops.

Actually, there is one package that's not mentioned on that link.

ume-config-netbook: kernel/xorg/gconf configuration for Intel-based subnotebooks. DO NOT INSTALL

As it stands Netbook Remix is just a collection of applications that sit on top of a bog standard 8.04 install. There's no secret source behind them. Saying that I am running 99% of the stuff in launchpad (minus the xorg fiddling bit) it works pretty good on my tweaked install running on a 4G EEE PC.

I'm not 100% sure what Netbook Remix will end up being personally, as most of the netbooks out there (EEE, et al) have pretty perky processors (Celeron's or Atom's) in them they just lack screen resolution. I'm also not 100% convinced that a OpenGL based launcher would give more battery life than a 2D display, but hey, I like eye candy and I'm keeping it :)

So on one hand Netbook Remix is out (kinda), on the other hand you can't download an ISO of it and go. But then if I remember the press releases Remix is aimed at OEM's looking to customise it for their machines rolling off the production lines; so you'll have to play OEM and rip bits off/add bits too 8.04 to do your stuff.
