I recently sat down and added up all of the computer related purchases and sales I've made over the last ten years ( or a very close estimate anyway ), and was rather surprised by the bottom line. Even though I could say that messing with PCs is my main hobby, I've spent more on books in the last 10 years then I have on PC related purchases.

So, how much have all of you spent on your computers in the last 10 years?

EDIT: ... I don't know what's wrong with me, somehow I missplaced thew word 'on' from the title.

Here's my list:

After discovering FOSS, I spend a lot less than I spent previously. The price of computer hardware has also dropped significantly.

Three decades ago I spent 10% of my yearly salary for my first computer.

My last computer cost 0.8% of my yearly salary.

Well, my first computer back in 1988 was £1,500 - and I have bought quite a few since then - I dread to think how much I have spent in total - probably in excess of £15,000 :-(

I have just spent another £500 on a new laptop.

As little as possible! My current Frankenbox cost about £100, the monitor and keyboard were gifts, the drives were scrounged from scrap machines and the speakers were a tenner from Argos. 2.8ghz, 512meg RAM (due to be upped soon, RAM is cheap atm) 120gb HD space.

As others have noted, hardware prices have dropped an incredible amount since home computing started to become popular.

My current PC is an e6750 with 2gbs of ram, a dvd burner, and a 160gb HD and I spent roughly $350 on it.

The only things I've bought for this computer are a monitor (around £70) and a usb wireless dongle (around £10).

The PC itself was being thrown out of an office so I salvaged it, wiped it, used the restore partition to install Windows, downloaded and burnt Ubuntu, and now basically just use Ubuntu for everything except recording music.

As little as possible! That's one of the main reasons I love Linux. Mostly, I try to pick up used computers and parts. Linux runs great on used PCs!

 er way too much money...hehe

considering I upgrade to new hardware every 6 months or so, a new notebook every 12 -18 months, and I also change the odd bit of hardware here and there if I see something faster/shiner/etc....I have spent a bucket load on my hobby  I am terrible as when I really want something I will go out and buy it...I do try to save..I really do...

I like to have new and higher end gear, and I like to keep very much up to date, I don't know how people survive on PC's more than 2 years old lol(very TIC of course!)

I'm the exact opposite of Geeky Girl. The last new PC I bought was a 386DX40.
Currently I'm running 3 Frankenboxes, with three different distros. None cost me more than $50 on ebay, though I put an $60 hard drive in my main one. They run more than fast enough for my needs (except when I'm ripping CDs).

EDIT: Having said that, the eeebox looks pretty sweet. Might have to get one for a mythbuntu box.

A lot less now than I used to.

My first PC was an Athlon 2100, 512mb RAM, 80gb HDD, Nvidia MX420, 15" 1024x768 TFT and cost £1300

My latest purchase was a laptop, C2D T5450, 2gb RAM, 160gb HDD, Intel 3100, 12.1" 1280x800 TFT and cost just £400

The one I'm thinking about right now is ~$3000. Of course that is a year away and should be much cheaper. It better be or it will stay a dream. lol

That's the only way to do it. And a hearty laugh to the term "Frankenbox." Personally, I favor the term "Gently Used Zombie," because it sounds like a promotional commercial =-P.

I'll eat up dead machines whenever I can. You know the ones, machines that lived on borrowed time for so long they went bankrupt (run the metaphor into the ground!). Yeah, this one's power supply might be bad, but that one's power supply is perfectly good... oh, this only needs RAM, fixed drives, and a few cables... and so on.

It sort of leaves a junkyard around my designated computer space, though =-/
