I am afraid it is completely IMPOSSIBLE to install Ubuntu 8.04 on a PC with Asus P5Q (p45) and ATI 4850.

Sata problem, then marvell controller problem, then atheros problem, then 4850 problem. I am not sure whether there is *one* compatible piece of silicon on that mobo that can run ubuntu...

However, if anyone by some miracle managed to run Ubuntu on a similar rig, please let me know how you did it.

I don't have a similar setup, but I did come across this (http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20080624021821000&board_id=1&model=P5Q&page=1&SLanguage=en-us) on the asus website. It mentions how to get sata working and atheros. Hope it helps!

Yes, I know about bios setting. The problem is that if you change the setting, then windows will not boot. Of course I can't change the setting every time i want to boot Ubuntu and then change it again to boot windows. (since windows is the only OS I can play high-end games) The situation is unacceptable).

and atheros.

If someone finds out how to solve (I mean real solution not "change bios setting" ) sata and then marvell controller problem, then Ι can deal with atheros

Creating two threads about the same issue isn't going to solve your problem faster. Though I have to concede that the old one got filled with useless **** by people that use "LOL" smilies...

Here, let me know if that worked: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=5607011&postcount=47

Never buy ATI, if you want to use Linux. Ever. It's just not worth it.

If it works, I'll let you know where you can wire the 681,756.20 euros...
