View Full Version : How big is your hard drive?

aysiu

Not that size matters, but I'm just curious...

For your main computer (however you define that), how big is your hard drive?

If your main computer has more than one hard drive, pick whatever hard drive you consider your main hard drive (however you define that).

If your main hard drive has multiple partitions, consider the drive size the total size made up by all the partitions.

If your drive is a flash drive or SSD, consider it a hard drive for the purposes of this poll.

250GB. Looking to upgrade though, but probably for speed, mine is only a 5400 RPM (laptop drive). So maybe 320GB soon.

EDIT: Dang! Second!

EDIT 2: Haha, now I have a 320GB 7200RPM hard drive. I did end up getting it, :-)

I have an external drive that's 160 GB.

I have a 500gb external HDD to store my media, but it's getting full.

I'm going to have to buy something bigger.

RAID (can be software or a hardware card) is something that will use multiple, same-sized drives and sync them together so they all have the same data on them. This way, when a drive fails, you always have a backup.

To add onto damis648's post. It is a software raid. Take a look at this wiki article. It gives a nice overview.

Right. Thanks :KS

What I thought RAID was is were, lets say 3 500GB HDD's, making it 1.5TB (basically one big partition which is 1.5TB in size. and its spread across 3 HDD's). Is that even possible?

Yes that is a type of RAID. There are multiple types. One type is called a striped raid and that treats multiple drives as one drive. Mine (RAID 5) is called a parity raid. It does something similar but it uses one drive worth of space to store parity bits which provide redundancy. If one of my drive fails I dont lose any data. In the case of a striped raid if any of the drives fails you lose all the data.

EDIT:

Whats the advantages and disadvantages of Software and Hardware RAID

In a software raid you have the CPU do all the RAIDing. In a hardware raid you have a raid card installed in your system which has its own processor. The benefit here is that you get much less overhead. raid cards though are typically very expensive so I just go with the software raid. Also I have a quad core processor on the desktop so the processing required to raid the drives is relatively small.

It can also run out quickly with video projects, by the time you figure in the original raw footage, temporary files used for rendering effects and other aspects of the project, the final edited version, the DVD image of the final version. And if you decide to use a tool like DVDShrink to fit a DL-disk's worth of image onto a regular DVD5, there's another disk image. It soon adds up!

one Gigabyte = 1000 Megabytes = 1000000 kilobytes = 1000000000 bytes
one gibibyte = 1024 mebibytes = 1024*1024 kibibytes = 1024*1024*1024 bytes

When a harddrive manufacturer sells a drive the measure in Gigabytes but when the OS reads the drive it measures gibibytes.

All the computers on my local area network (LAN) have either 160 GB or 250 GB disk drives with matched sized external drives for backups. My Linksys Dual-Band Wireless-N Ultra Range Plus Gigabit Router also has Storage Link. I'm thinking of connecting a 2 TB disk to the router so all of the computers on my LAN can share DVDs and CDs from that drive, as well as use it for backups. Let the RIAA or MPAA hack my network then prove I'm doing anything wrong without committing a crime in the process. I have all of the original DVDs and CDs, and the distribution is limited to my LAN; therefore, the copies are "fair use".

In what is now my only computer -- my laptop -- I have a 120GB HDD. In addition to that, I have an 80GB backup drive.

In my desktop that I built last year, I had 2 160GB drives put together in RAID 0 to make for a quick 320GB drive. I no longer own this PC, nor was it really my main PC when I did own it. My wife's laptop has something like 240GB.

The one I've counted for the poll is my laptop's 120GB.

3.5"

If your main computer has more than one hard drive, pick whatever hard drive you consider your main hard drive (however you define that).

That is impossible. I use two hard drives and they are both used. My first drive (no master, I use Sata) is 250 GB and has four partitions. sda1 is Windows, sda2 is Linux (/). sda3 is 10 GB and is my /home for Linux. The rest of the drive is for storing data.

The second drive is also 250 GB and is split into two partitions. swap is on there and the drive is used for storing also. All of my data (except for home config files) are on the big partition on this drive, and the drive is also used for "home" for Windows (the personal directories are mapped onto this drive)

So I have 500 GB total on this computer. (My other computer has 30 GB, my Thinkpad has 160 GB, and my other laptop has a smaller drive, not sure the exact size but I think it is 30 GB)

I have 160GB, split between one Windows and two Linux systems. I don't keep any data on the machine, so there's a lot of fresh air on that drive. May swap it for a smaller SSD when they come down in price a little.

Data is on a 320GB NAS that's shared with a laptop. Possibly going to up that to 500GB if the missus keeps downloading the way she has been lately.

It's a partition reserved for installation files so you'll be able to restore your system from there in case of complete crash. I have the same in my IBM laptop, planning to nuke that partition as soon as the warranty ends (April 2009 or something), or maybe even before that.

I know it looks like they got the third worst! But really, my wife cannot even find the firefox icon on her own. She refused to use openoffice and has used the ms office I installed for her a total of 6 times in 6 months. Mostly the machine is used for talking on skype and by my daughter to browse the disney site in xubuntu and play SuperTux (which I also installed on windows, among other free gamesm but she likes xubuntu best). For that usage, hardware/power is fine. The p3 1.0ghz is getting a nearly identical installation for when more power is needed or my kid wants to start adding programs on her own; then I will simply change the box, as they are both Dell GX110s, and move the p3-667 to torrent duty. :)

Isn't that a rather personal question? I mean, we haven't even been on a first SSH session together. Yet...

If your main computer has more than one hard drive, pick whatever hard drive you consider your main hard drive (however you define that).

Well, internal or external? SATA or USB? toe-MAY-toh or toe-MAH-toh?

If your main hard drive has multiple partitions, consider the drive size the total size made up by all the partitions.

But I thought you said size didn't matter. Now I'm confuzzed...

If your drive is a flash drive or SSD, consider it a hard drive for the purposes of this poll.

And now you are challenging the solid state of my hard disk? What kind of round-trip-time-to-live are you taking us on here?

My first hard drive was an external 5 1/4" 80 MB SCSI-interfaced Seagate hard drive. I bought it and was promptly criticized by a friend for spending more on a HDD than I should have, since 40 MB would be more than anyone would ever need.

At the moment I have a 250GB SATA in my desktop computer. I have both Windows (for games) and Ubuntu on it. I have given Windows ~50GB and the rest to Ubuntu. However I am running low on space on both and found a nice price on a 1TB SATA.

I'm thinking of installing Windows on the 250GB and give it ~200GB and installing Ubuntu beside that with 50GB, and then using the 1TB as /home

Would this be a nice plan?

I use two hard drives:

The main drive is a 250GB Samsung, and
The secondary is an 80GB Toshiba used for testing (not usually connected.)

I wanted to test the Windows 7 release candidate, but I can't afford to buy a spindle of DVD+R media, and all of the methods I've tried to make a USB flash drive bootable for the job have been met with futility ( several of 'em, ) so I'm simply leaving the Toshiba disconnected until I'm ready to test Ubuntu 9.04 in earnest.

In my netbook, I have a 160GB drive that's mostly empty, except for Windows. I plan to install Ubuntu on it sometime.
Finally, in my external drive I have a paltry 120GB of space, which is almost filled up. I gotta get a bigger one.
All told, I have around 360GB of space spread across 2 computers and an external HDD. :)

Ostensibly, I have a 400 GB hard-drive, but $(df -h) will give me 362G, while $(df -hH) yields 388G for my main partition.

This is actually a modest size if you consider that I rip my CDs as FLAC files so that each album can easily take 300 MB of space.

Size you say??

When comparing, for example, the WD Caviar Black 500 GB and 640 GB versions, the 500GB version uses two 250 GB platters vs the 2 320 GB platters of the 640 GB, so the 640GB should be slightly faster....whether you need the space or not is irrelevant....the SPEED gain must also be considered, particularly considering how cheap mechanical HDDs are these days..even large capacities.

Now, the Seagate 500GB drives uses a single 500 GB platter. This should give it an advantage over the Caviar Black HDDs, BUT Seagate's "eco-friendly" design slows it down a tad thereby making it come in alongside the Caviars in terms of speed.

Now, the WD Caviar Black 1TB has been found to beat all 7200 RPM HDDs in I/O performance. However, it does have throughput issues when compared to Seagate.......but we all know about Seagate's denial of their plainly obvious reliability issues.

If you want even faster, then the Wester Digital Caviar Black 1 TB utilizes three 333 GB platters leading to a further marginal increase in density and hence performance over the 640 GB version.i.e. it should be the fastest!

Bottom line is that HDD transfer speeds increase when platter density is higher. HOWEVER, fewer platters offer the advantage of generating a smaller amount of heat and also produce less noise. If sound, and NOT speed, is your prime concern then a two platter 640 GB HDD(i.e. a SMALLER capacity) would run cooler and slightly quieter than the larger three platter (higher capacity and speed) version.
