View Full Version : Worst download experiences

I was wondering what peoples worst download experiences were:

- like a download that did something amusing or terrible to your computer
- some software that was really dire
- something that really annoys you with certain downloads

I mean I get a bit peeved with security updates (which I suppose is a dig at windows rather than ubuntu, as windows tends to have more of them) but why the heck ARE there so many security updates? Using a wireless modem means I have limited download capacity, and to use half of that each month on security updates seems crazy (with a dual boot, it means twice as much!). I mean, I don't see them replacing the security guard every week with a new one at the front gate to our company... still the same one there watching television as normal.

I cannot believe that - you have really made my day! Whenever I am annoyed with a slow download I will always think of the month long video download you did. That is so classic

I can simply not imagine what that must have been like ;-). I, honestly, have never had a really bad download \ software experience, except the occasional Windows virus (Before I "quit"... 100% Ubuntu now).

Updating my parents computer (Windows XP) with a 56K modem :( . And since the telephone costs are still lower than the cheapest fast Internet provider they don't think it's necessary to switch.

Back in 2003, I downloaded a program that would supposedly give me tons of items and money in an MMORPG. Turns out the program was a keylogger. As soon I executed it, windows crashed for about 10 minutes. My MMORPG account password had to be reset and my valuable assets had gone POOF!

My worst experience was in early 2007 after I downloaded and watched Borat. The movie was so funny, so I went to my fave torrent site to see if there was anything about a second Borat film coming out. The "Borat 2 Trailer" that I found turned out to be homemade bestiality. 3 seconds of such a scene scarred me for about a week.

Downloading on a public tracker.

I and many others do it all the time, not quite sure if it qualifies for this thread.

And for my answer, I don't think I really have any bad experiences, except downloading Ubuntu and having it fail due to corrupted download, I think it happened twice, it taught me just how great bitTorrent is

If you download something on a public tracker, 99% of the time your speeds won't exceed 20kb. There are exceptions.

On a private tracker, you download something old with 1 seed -> 600kb/sec.

Windows days...I watch a video on Youtube about moparscape (which is real and safe, RS players probably know what it is), and there's a download link for it in the descripton. I download and run it and it turns out to be a runescape keylogger :lolflag: I get my password changed but I lose nothing because I have a bank pin and recovery questions though :-P And of course dealing with netzero and juno free dialup until I got DSL in 2004 :-P

Well yes, but on a 512kbps connection (128kbps up) that's fine for me, if I have 2 or 3 torrents at that speed I'm pretty much maxing my download speed, and with that ratio I couldn't really expect to do very well on a private tracker, since most of them insist you upload a lot

Downloading a 500+ mb Battlefield 2 patch to play online (just after the patch was released) and it took 14 hours. When it was finished, the patch didn't even load, as I ran out of disk space before it was finished unpacking ( I run a very small 10GB Windows XP partition and a shared Ubuntu/Windows one for games)

Getting some weird porn instead of the music/movies/whatever I thought I was downloading. Happened several times, back in the days when I used to go "Yarr!" a lot.

These days it's probably torrents without seeders. Like many of the .ogg torrents at Jamendo :(

overgeneralizing gets you nowhere

my ports arnt even forwarded correctly and i still get above 100kb/s usually on public trackers.

the same thing (1 seeder = fast download) would happen on a public tracker if the seeder had uberfast internet.

and private/public trackers dont matter. the way bittorent works is the more seeders = faster it is, but wiht private trackers, since your ratio is more important, people usually seed a lot longer then they do for public torrents.

Yea, first time EVER on this forum, this looked like an interesting topic. Saw some hilarious stuff, :lolflag: that beastiality one cracked me up. But, I feel your pain, that happened to be a couple of times. People are sick, putting stuff like that in the "kids" category for "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" :(
