After reading this (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2008/aug/13/privacy.civilliberties) article I'm somewhat concerned about my privacy online.

I also just realised that gmail doesn't use https, but plain old http, that got me even more paranoid.

How secure do you guys keep your email and IM chatter?

Encrypt it. There is no other way.

Ever since Labour got into power here 12 years ago, our privacy has slowly but surely been taken away from us.
It makes me sick >_<
Hope someone stands up for our privacy rights and other liberties this government has taken off us >_<

Is it like this anywhere else in the world?

I use Jabber and Gajim with GPG Encryption to my contacts.

No no no :). Google are awesome for this, they are one of the few that let you use https. Simply change your address bar to https. They also added it as an option so you you always stay connected as https.

You can go to Settings in Gmail and at the very bottom of the General tab you'll see Browser Connection. Simply change the radio button to Always use https, then Save Changes and you'll be using the more secure connections.

I think I saw it on one of the Ubuntu planets a few days ago but I can't track it down at the moment.

That's what I was thinking.

No way in hell anyone I know will be able or willing to set this up.

No, I have several contacts, actually. All of my contacts have GPG keys, and then I am using Jabber/XMPP (protocol) and Gajim (Jabber Client) and enable encryption. It works quite well.
