I have a dual-boot xp pro with Ubuntu Feisty set up lovely but have to re-install xp. I know windows will destroy grub on a fresh install and i will be unable to see the linux partition but can this be avoided or will i have to run a tool to restore Grub?

you can't prevent xp from overwriting grub but you can easily restore the latter from the live cd (see link my signature). Get fs-driver (http://www.fs-driver.org/) so you can access linux partition from windows.

Yeah, restoring GRUB really is a painless process. I've had to do it so many times now that I'm kind of starting to enjoy it ;)
