Whenever I hold down shift I can't type the spacebar. Is there any way I can fix this?

I tried shift + space bar into terminal, office word, Mozilla and gedit and I can type it with no problem. What program are you using?

Are you sure that you are not also hitting the Ctrl key too?

Oh weird. For me I tried the same things and it didn't work on any of them. I have this problem with every program on Ubuntu. Each and every thing.

I noticed when I hold to shift keys I can't type. Maybe the other shift key got stuck on your keyboard and you can't type?

well its not that when I hold shift I can't type (it capitalizes each letter...), just the space button doesn't work when shift is held down.

Is your caps lock not working?

Out of curiosity, why DO you want to type space with the Shift key pressed down?

No my caps lock works but when I'm typing to capitalize just a few letters I use shift.

although this brings up a good point, it is because when I type I always happen to hold down shift right before hitting the capitalized letter and if there's a space then it gets hit after holding down shift (I just happened to type this way), and the space doesn't come up.

I'm using a Dell PS/2 Keyboard if that helps.

I can't say for sure. One possible reason is that it is some kind of short cut key combo for your system. Or that the keyboard decides that no one would want to Shift+Space so ignores it.

on Windows Shift + Space still works so its not that the keyboard isn't allowing it. Maybe it is some shortcut thing, I will check.

Good point lukjad007! It's probably a shortcut for something...

Shift + space wasn't working for me either, but it seemed like it only started after I added multiple keyboard layouts, so I looked in the Keyboard Layout Options and found what fixes it!

System > Preferences > Keyboard > Layouts > Other Options > Using space key to input non-breakable space character

It was on "Default", but I changed it to "Space key outputs usual space at any level", which seems to work fine. The other ones might work too; I'm not really sure what they mean.

Oh great! Actually my problem was fixed when I had messed something up with gnome and when I deleted my preferences it automatically set it back up to whatever is usual and space + shift is working now. Thanks though, I'll remember that for the future.
