Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox has published this year's awards for best designed applications, from a usability point of view:

http://www.useit.com/alertbox/application-design.html

Their report (http://www.nngroup.com/reports/applications/design/) sounds appealing. I'm just an UI amateur and I'm not sure I'll be able to spend those $98 on it, but Canonical should buy the site license version.

they dont need to. there are already standards for UI's that were created by/for gnome programs that most of them follow.

and that report is nice, except i have never heard of any of those programs.

and the 'lightbox' thing existed way before whatever that program they showed came out...i remember ubuntu using it like in breezy

Lightbox (http://www.lokeshdhakar.com/projects/lightbox2/) is just a simple image overlay script. I'm not sure what the big deal is...

I've grown tired of Lightbox -- it's a good idea (useful for images), but I don't like how it shades the rest of the screen. Sometimes I want to do something else while viewing the image. If I need to, I use this script (http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex4/thumbnail.htm).

You need to pay to see them.

What an arrogante attitude! I hope the UI team at Canonical is far more humble...

Oh, you never heard about those programs but "the report is nice". Have you bought and read it? You're fast...

and the 'lightbox' thing existed way before whatever that program they showed came out...i remember ubuntu using it like in breezyThey already say that. It's how that software uses it what counts.

You obviously didn't read what Lightbox is praised for in the UI report... (Hint: not for images.)

Sigh. :( I guess it's a long way until professional UI research has a place among Ubuntu users... Hopefully, as I said, the UI team at Canonical (if that even exists) know what they're doing and get to study a little bit.

Just because people don't agree with your opinion, or that report- doesn't mean you have to start mocking them. Or start being cynical.

To be honest, I wouldn't pay $98 just to read a report on how people design their UI's.
**Sorry... just the post above p***ed me off >=[

Not "my opinion" and not "how people design their UIs". It's more like "a professional report on UI design written by the most regarded professionals in the field" being bashed with an amazing display of ignorance.

Oh, and you don't have to be sorry. I'm also "p***ed off" by the utter ignorance being shown in this thread (which I didn't expect, honestly) and feel pretty insulted myself. It's very healthy to let it out of one's chest and now I'm fine. Hope you too.
