I have recently got Nokia E71 and just love it. Emailing, multimedia, switch modes, just makes this device complete package and I believe better than the nokia N95 (only if you can use android on it:( then N95 would have been great too).

Thrown a Sandisk microSdhc 8GB in it which worked fine. Symbian S60 OS on E71 works without a hitch and with very quick response makes multitasking a breeze.Fring is also now supported on E71 to make VOIP skype calls and chat, msn, yahoo,AIM and gtalk.

I have used iphone my partner has and just got to say E71 is more usable device. Battery life is fantastic, even on heavy usage with wlan and bluetooth enabled it lasts 4 days for me and on average 1 week. However, I charge every other day now just to be on the safe side.

I would like to know your opinion on your phones and please vote if you like any of the above phones or any other not listed.

I've had a couple of phones by Nokia. The first (I can't remember the model) was a D-AMPS one, but it packed a sad not long after a neighbour wanted me to check his phone's battery on my phone. The second one was a CDMA phone (again, can't remember the model but same Telco) sold to a neighbour for $10 when I replaced it with my current phone, a Pantech TX-215C (also CDMA) It's pretty basic but does the job. The lady of the house has a near-new Sanyo SCP-3200 which she loves (also CDMA)

The mobile carrier we're with shut down its AMPS network a year or two back, and the latest gossip I've paid any attention to is that it will be replacing its CDMA network with a GSM network some time in the next few years.

Can i use my FreeRunner on any network, worldwide?

Neo FreeRunner is a tri-band gsm device that comes in 850/1800/1900 and 900/1800/1900 variants. To find out which Neo is for you, we suggest checking the supported GSM bands in your territory. (http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/index.shtml)

I do.

Aaaah, sigh..... I remember when back in the early 1970s, the area I lived in at the time had a manual exchange where the operator asked "number, please?" at the start of a call. In about 1971 the phone company arranged for rotary dials to be put in the phones, so we could ask for "automatic, please" but still going through the operator for local calls. Then the phone company upgraded the area to fully automatic some time around 1973.

I don't know of a specific phone, but I'm looking for one that includes:

Linux or other free software os
Receive/send Text messages
Plays mp3, ogg, wav, and flac music formats
supports adding ringtones for free (using mp3's, wav's, etc)
can be accessed using a usb cable in linux

That way I can make my own ring tones, listen to a few tunes, receive texts from my friends, though I am loathe to send them, and possible add some silly free cell phone games.

I liked the Nokia 6310i best, still do. I don't use gadgets like camera's and such. I hate those colour screens which are only readable in very specific light conditions. I just want to make calls and send text messages.

Sorry dude but those aren't phones.

Those are little computers in my eyes.

A phone is used to call people and to send sms and/or mss.

I refuse to use on of those smart phones.

A good old gsm will do fine that.

I'm using an old samsung model.

It's fast, small and does what it has to do.

I have an e71 as well. It´s pretty cool, just a few things have annoyed me. Have you had any luck bluetoothing from phone to ubuntu? I can do it with other phones but not mine. I get around it by emailing to myself via wlan. I find the phone very compatible with usb in mass storage mode with ubuntu, To get songs to the phone, create a folder called ¨Downloaded music¨ on memory card. It is a comforting feature that you can use any song as a ring tone. :guitar:

If old samsung models serve your needs then it is great. But personally, for me smartphones have made my life very organised and time saving, some of the benfits of using smartphones i have found are :Sync emails on the go, multimedia when i need. SSH into my server through wlan or GPRS, edit office documents on the go, read email reports with attachments and act immediately on them, use VOIP (skype )instead of airtime to save my bill, sync and centralise my calendar and daily tasks with server, bluetooth into another device to transfer files and content, get email notification of processes running on my database server on the go.

Indeed smartphones can be regarded as mini computers but for few people this is the best thing happened in portable world.

If all you need to do is call and text then anything would do but won't give you the same sense of power you get when using smartphones. Just an opinion....

In the last year I've used a Blackberry Pearl/Curve and iPhone. It's a toss up for me between the curve and iphone. I dislike the pc software suite for Blackberries almost as much as itunes. The Curve is easier to get working with linux but the sheer amount of great free software out there for the iphone is just staggering. The data/text plans are also cheaper for the iphone than the blackberries. This phone has always interested me, but i never got around to researching it much.
It's linux based and pretty sexy imo: http://trolltech.com/developer/resources/greenphone

edit: *sigh* update on the greenphone: they only made a thousand and they sold out :'(

In my personal opinion, iphone is good as a multimedia phone but cant be considered as smartphone as it lacks fundamental thing in smartphone which is keypad. I like to type fast with my thumbs and see the input as i type not the keys. E71 has reduced my typing errors to minimum. i am almost as fast as I type on normal keyboard. The form factor is nearly perfect if not perfect for keypad on E71.

As i said this is my opinion on iphone others may differ.

I have the Nokia E71 and it is a dream. I had the Nokia E70 before and this is a major upgrade!!!

All I can say is wow! it puts all my friends 3G iPhones to shame!!!

I can run GPS, Fring (skype, msn, aim, etc), my music player and Google Mail all at the same time and the phone doesn't lag. Try doing that with an iPhone! Ohhhh... right, you can't multi-task with iPhones unless they're Mac software. :(

Not to mention, it is so much faster to type with a keyboard.

Also added a 8GB micro-sd card. Love it!

I just did a bandwidth test too to see how fast the 3G would go on Fido/Rogers networks in Canada and I managed to push 5.7 mbps. Not bad!

My only complaint: the small headphone jack. Not convenient but well located in comparison to the Nokia E70

Hi eightinches, I have just checked and replied to your private message.

As N95 uses the same S60 platform you may be able to use this guide http://mynewn95.blogspot.com/2008/06/using-3g-modem-with-linux-ubuntu-804.html to make your ubuntu box connected to internet via E71 using usb. If not then you may post here your results and we can help you further.

i fully agree with you E71 has surpassed all functions i could imagine in a phone. E71 is underestimated at the moment, but in reality it is very powerful device in practical terms.

i think that is called marketing and publicity for phones like iphone and N95(crashes very often) which are indeed overrated. Only looks don't count!

My new phone which I've had for about 2/3 weeks now is a Samsung G600. It's pretty much a simple evolution of the previous phone I had for over 2 years - the Samsung D600 :)

The D600 is easily the best phone I've ever had and I'm hoping my new toy lasts just as long, the number of times I dropped that thing accidently on solid concrete floor, it just kept on going with no cracks or major damage!

I had to upgrade though when the battery's life was becoming pretty crippled and it was getting sensitive to knocks and switching itself off over the last month or so.

This might be a bit fanboyish but Samsung phones I think are now doing what Nokia did when they became huge.

Just to add - the 3200 and 3310 are legendary phones! :D Although that may be because I was still at school when everyone had those and most classes were just about people playing Snake when no one was looking their way.
