edit: I also just came across the plugin, i guess it's been around a while, but I live in a hole and come out only during the full moon so I must have missed it :)

Ah, good it even is about the Gimp-plugin.
My third eye assumed that you were gonna link to the old video from the author of the algorithm.

You can buy a less advanced implementation of the algorithm as a plugin for Photoshop for some bucks. Maybe someone made a free plugin in the meantime. (Hope not.)
