I am fairly new to Linux. When trying to use the Update Manager I get the following Error message:

Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Any ideas what I can do to rectify the situation?

Go into System, Administration, Software Sources, and uncheck the box next to CD-ROM.

I too just installed Ubuntu for the first time and am having the same issue, however when I follow this path, Go into System, Administration, Software Sources, and uncheck the box next to CD-ROM, I do not see an option to select/de-select the CD-ROM.

I looked in all the tabs and the tab labelled, Ubuntu Software, just has a grey box under, "Installable from CD-ROM/DVD", To install from a CD-ROM or DVD, insert the medium into the drive. Nothing to check or uncheck.

Any help would be appreciated to over come this.

Can you open a terminal (Applications>Accessories>Terminal) and post the output to

cat /etc/apt/sources.list

You are using Feisty which has reached its end of life, I would suggest upgrading to a later version of Ubuntu like hardy, Intrepid or Jaunty.

Gutsy (7.10) has reached its end of life as well, the easier way would be to backup all your important stuff and do a clean install of a later release.
Or you could have a look at this (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades) on a possible way to upgrade.
