I am a computer technician for a school district. We are currently planning on changing over to a privatized network topology.

One of the things I have been charged with is finding a internet content filtering system for each site.

Being a huge fan of Ubuntu servers this is the first place I wanted to check.

Does anyone know of an open source content filtering app that will run on ubuntu?

We would preferably like it to have accounts... do be used to bypass filtering per IP address.

Well it actually runs on Debian underneath but it has it's own OS built it.

It's very good, and no matter what you use you will probably come back to it.

Content filtering can be done in several ways, and it all depends on your needs.

For example; Mozilla Firefox or SeaMonkey in combination with AdBlock can block content, but my guess would be something like OpenDNS which is free, can block websites that are considered to be inappropriate for schools or other public places like hotels or even the salvation army. Just have a look at: http://www.opendns.com/ and see if it fits your needs.

Web proxies, like Privoxy can block sites and certain content but requires a lot more input from you, the administrator.
