View Full Version : What MSN Client do you use?

I have tried all the clients i know of and all seem to be a pretty big let-down. From over-complications to rude developers i have tried:

AMSN
Mercury
Pidgin
Emesene

Anyone know of anymore?

Emesene looks the nicest but from what i have seen the latest fix 1.0.1 doesn't update my msn name for any contacts so that is a no go, and the developers are pretty childish.

Pidgin, well their msn style is very old, and they don't even let us resize the chat box easily anymore (talk abotu stubborn developers).

Mercury with its latest update won't let me connect. (Also slower than the rest through Java).

And AMSN i have found developers pretty rude and the client is complicated and ugly.

So...suggestions please :D

I did watch the videos and read the post about aMSN2 and it looks mighty promising.

I also now have a webcam that works so i would like a client that can use it.

I use Pidgin and Carrier (a Pidgin fork). I also use Galaxium (http://code.google.com/p/galaxium/), but its still under heavy development.

Look for the mono dev files. As you compile galaxium, it may complain about missing dependencies, just install them as needed.

That is what i am looking for but there are loads of files when i search and i don't want to have to install each one.

configure: error: Please install mono version 1.2.4 or later to install Galaxium.
Please see http://www.mono-project.org/ to download latest mono sources or packages

I have mono 1.2.6 installed!

Hmm ELD, why don't you just use the precompiled .debs?

Lookie (for Hardy):
http://code.google.com/p/galaxium/wiki/InstallUbuntuHardy

Or for Gutsy:
http://code.google.com/p/galaxium/wiki/InstallUbuntuGutsy

Emesene, in my opinion the best msn (only) client. aMSN just feels so slow.

Pidgin is easy and simple. Like they say "Simplicity is genius!".;)

Yea I'm going to have to say finch. That way I can run it on my server via screen and access the same IM windows from all the machines in my house. Awesomeness? I think so.

Currently playing with Empathy. But for regular use (which isn't particularly regular anymore) I use Pidgin.

For the moment I'm using the newest emesene version.

It easier to use than pidgin and looks way better than that design horror called amsn.

I just need to chat to some friends every now and then.

Another good one I tried was Galaxium.

Google for it.

Kmess
tmsnc

Anyway, I use Emesene. It's exactly what I was looking for in an msn client. aMSN is ugly as all hell, and I don't know if there's anyway to turn off those damn "<user> has joinen/left the conversation" messages.

aMSN for me, I don't think it's very ugly at all, and I don't find it slow at all. The devs seem just as nice as any other dev team. (Although I find it even more childish to not use a program because the devs are rude to someone who asks a question that has been asked 5 times already on that page)
Webcam works great, which is a must for me, and the only thing that I don't have working is the winks, and I despise winks anyways, so this is a plus. (although I believe I could make it work if I wanted)

Out of all the Linux MSN options, aMSN includes the most features that actually work. (also I can nudge people like 3 times a second without limit,)

pidgin, since I use both msn and aim. Much easier to keep track.

Been hearing Galaxium mentioned here and there lately, so decided to try it out...

Wow, after the lackluster MSN experience that is Pidgin, this seems ace! :)

I was using aMSN until it stopped connecting 1 week ago. I am behind a proxy server and now refuses to connect.

I have tried pidgin and emesene with no luck.

aMSN was very good though.:-?
I'll keep trying to figure out what happened

(EDIT: Fixed it! The answer stays aMSN)

Install mono-1.0-devel or mono-2.0-devel to start with.

aMSN for MSN, and Pidgin for everything else. aMSN may be ugly, but it does the job quite well. It even recognized my cheap little camera :-)

Thats perfect too, especially without a gui, its the future of connecting to IRC and other protocols :guitar:
