there is an interesting article about building basic web spiders here (http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-spider/index.html).
there is a script to find out about the server running, too. it is quite interesting to see which official sites run which systems.

Its funny how anyone who surfs the net probably makes use of linux everyday.
They might not want to use linux on their desktops but they're using it for sure!

Even though they'd rather you not (if you want to see certain content anyway).

I found http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?site=geocities.com interesting - sometimes it's "unknown", sometimes it's FreeBSD

They run entirely on Linux, and their own web server.

Looks like someone bought it from them actually.

Though no, seriously, the MS sites are behind a Linux firewall, so it looks like MS is running Linux but they aren't.

And do you guys know what's www.live.com running on their 5 main servers?

http://www.live.com (http://www.live.com/) was running unknown on Linux when last queried at 7-Aug-2008 09:05:10 GMT - refresh now (http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?site=www.live.com&probe=1) Site Report (http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=http://www.live.com)

So, why does it crash?
some of the people who access myspace do so on unix based machines, and we all know how contagious their instability is.

So, why does it crash?

It "crashes" because linux isn't invincible and still has a whole lot of stability issues, like terrible flash support.... Sites like Myspace and Bebo "crash" quite frequently on Ubuntu. Though it's not really the site that's crashing, just firefox.

I asked because you were so certain it had nothing to do with the software used, that you'd have some idea what the actual reason is or was.

one minute! when i said "crash" i meant how certain pages will load with huge errors on them, telling you to refresh the page, it happens like every time i go there.

I've checked the best universities in america, england and germany. Most of them use Linux or Solaris and some of them FreeBSD. Florida univ uses (http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?site=www.ufl.edu) AIX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIX) :D.

Please don't assume I was certain it was a result of the software being used, all I said was

"Myspace didn't crash because it's hosted using Windows server 2003........."
Where in there did I proclaim that it was because I'm so certain of software issues? Though in actual truth it is a software issue, in linux. Funny how millions of Windows users around the world don't seem to have issues with said sites.

Where in there did I proclaim that it was because I'm so certain of software issues? You said "Myspace didn't crash because it's hosted using Windows server 2003........." not "I think..." or "It's likely that...", so, it was a statement of certainty.

Though in actual truth it is a software issue, in linux. Funny how millions of Windows users around the world don't seem to have issues with said sites. There you go again, talking about browsers, and I already said I know why the browsers crash. I'm not interested in the browsers.
I'm talking about the performance of the servers and their low average up-time and constant reporting of internal error recovery.

I think you are misunderstanding their points...

Beside, when you phrase your sentence that way, it's implied that you know the reason why Myspace crashes frequently, or rather, why--as you have put--it didn't crash just because it's hosted using Windows Server 2003.

I'm the only queried site running out of my netblock (http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/hosted?netname=RRACI,76.188.0.0,76.189.255.255)...

The OLPC site runs Ubuntu (http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?site=www.laptop.org).
