Ok, here's my situation. I am connected to the internet via satellite. The signal from the satellite goes to a box (adapter of some sort), where it is then sent to my computer via a strait (not crossed, i checked) Ethernet Cat 5e cable.

What I want to do is get my internet to my Xbox 360 in the living room for as little cost as possible. I think I can buy a router, such as http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124190 that one (putting tomato on it of course) and buy a network card for the xbox 360.

However, all combined, that's over 100 dollars. I don't want to spend that much just to be able to download demos (cuz i can't play games on sat). Couldn't I just buy some sort of cable, say around 40 ft, making sure it's the same type, and some sort of hub or switch? Or do i have to have a router if I want to be able to use the computer and the xbox 360 internet at the same time?

I understand that this isn't really ubuntu related or anything, but help would be greatly appreciated.

Your best option is a network repeater or you could go for a router which could work out cheaper,

Make sure the router if you go down that route, supports disabling of DHCP and also wireless distribution system WDS

so maybe something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124005.

Would this do what I wanted? Share the connection between my computer and my xbox 360?

Provided I have the 2 extra cables required.

I dunno what an Ebox is but I'm just going to assume you are talking about an Xbox 360?

Your Xbox 360 already has a 100 Mb/s RJ-45 ethernet connector on the back.

If you PC has 2 Ethernet ports you can connect the Xbox 360 to your PC via a cross-over cable and share the PCs internet connection via Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). If your PC only has 1 Ethernet port install another Ethernet car as they are really cheap.

This is probably the cheapest option available to you.

The second option would be to simply buy a small 4 or 8 port switch and connect all three devices together with the switch. This would be easier but might be slightly more expensive.

Yes, I was talking about the Xbox 360.

My computer has only one Ethernet port, but adding a card is not an option for several reasons (unless you could hook it to a usb port?)
a: It's a Sony VAIO, and I can't even get the case open
b: if i added a card, i don't know where the additional port would go, there's no room on the back.

Here's my plan. I buy this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833156133 plus this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812105309.

I plug the usb network adapter into my pc, then plug the cable into that and my xbox 360. With ICS, my internet connection is shared between my computer and my xbox! Please, please, tell me if this won't work, or if it will. Any suggestions appreciated.

Oh, and would doing it that way allow me to stream music from my computer to the xbox?

Sounds like that should work, if indeed your computer recognises the USB thingie as a network adaptor. Judging by the reviews, that shouldn't be a problem if you're running Windows ...

all you would need is a switch and a long network cable.

modem -------> switch --------> pc
............................ --------> xbox

thank you both, and it seems to me that one of those solutions will work perfectly for my situation. price will probably be the deciding factor.

Very helpful.

Oh, and yes, when I would be using this setup I would be using windows. My brother plays WoW on windows, and when he's playing that is when I'm on the xbox. The only time (it's still nearly half the time) my computer is in Ubuntu is when I'm on.

Just thought a bit of useless info might be appreciated. lol.
