View Full Version : [ubuntu] FakeRAID Hardy Dual Boot install WIN2k

Loved and used Ubuntu on my laptop and finally made the plunge to setup my desktop. As other users in the house need Windows I needed Dual Boot.

Followed the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto with great success. Ubuntu is up and running, networked just fine, sound, video, etc.

The only catch is that due to the FakeRAID and existing Win2K install, the Grub install (and setup was a little vague) has left my Win2K inaccessible.


Originally had a 8Gb Boot Partition, a 40Gb Data, 3Gb swap and 2 other partitions on an extended partition.

Removed the extended partition and recreated it using fdisk as 32Mb Boot, 512 Gb swap and the rest as Root. But all on the extended. This left my Windows Partitions mostly untouched.

Now Ubuntu loads up fine. Windows loading from grub shows the f8 prompt for startup options, followed by the Windows 2000 Splash screen but before the progress bar can reach the end I get a Blue Screen error. I will post the exact death screen later along with the fdisk output and fstab if needed.

Ok the question is, is this MBR, LVB, boot.ini, NTLDR, NTDetect.com, or some option miss-set in menu.lst or fstab?

I know it is getting to NTDetect but really this could be any number of things.

Status Update one.

Noticed that the primary partition did not have the correct system id/type, corrected. Now I can boot windows but it does not see the data drive or the swap drive.

i am having the thing happing,after having a painful install on raid 0 with no ideas :(
