I've gone and done it, I've finally admitted to myself that a phone can be many things and bought myself an N-95.

What I would like to know is what apps you would suggest I try? both on the phone and on my ubuntu box to take advantage of this little bundle of tricks.
Also if anybody has had any luck using SignSis, I installed it to try to get RotateMe to work but I just cannot get my head around it, and good info is scarce for someone who doesn't even understand why apps need signing.

Thatnks in advance,

I dont have one but setting up a UPnP server maybe be cool? Rythmbox and (i think) Elisa Media Centre has support for that? This maybe be useful too:

Sync N95 and Evolution (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=705103)

MediaTomb is a good UPnP media server, quite easy to configure (only tried it once though, going to install it later)
I have not tried syncing with any desktop apps yet, but that will come along soon.
I recommend a card reader or a bluetooth dongle to transfer stuff

WOW!!

I just returned from work wondering if I had any response to my thread, and I find an abundance. Lots to go on. I have spent the last week trawling the net but kept finding the same 25ish apps, I expected this thread to turn up the same or at best narrow the choice to the best of the bunch (obviously my search criteria leaves a lot to be desired) you guys have suggested apps I have not yet found as well as narrowing down the list I was already aware of.

I have bluetooth which I prefer to usb, but with the N95 I find that a usb connection is required for some things especially if it is required that a file is placed in a particular location in the phones file system; perhaps Y-Browser will change that, if not, it's really not too big a deal to connect via usb.

I still haven't mannaged to get RotateMe signed and have now found that I am unable to sign Fring, I'm sure the answer will arrise sooner or later, one way or another.

I installed MobiTubia, what advantages does emtube offer over it? Although since a couple of you have mentioned emtube and nobody has mentioned MobiTubia, I'll probably go ahead and find out for myself.

A huge thanks for all input so far, as I've already mentioned, I am new to smartphones so I have a lot to learn; I only had my phones internet activated earlier this evening following a call to my service provider (Orange). I hate calling customer service centres for anything, but despite my preconceptions I was lucky enough to be connected with an agent who knew what he was talking about, was easy to understand, understood me, got my name right and even put me on a much better tarrif. I know this has nothing to do with the thread, but it is that rare to be pleased about customer service I thought I would share it. Oh, and my call was answered so quickly that I never had to endure any naff music or listen to a recording of somebody telling me my call was important to them. Happy days!:)

One last thing; will I need to back up my data and apps before upgrading firmware?

Thanks again,

F&T

Hi F&T
I'm an N95 user of some 10 months, and Ubuntu for longer. One of the most useful apps for travelling is Nokia Maps, make sure you have a flat rate data plan and activate the roaming warning if you go abroad though. Google maps is good too - nice integration with the GPS; and I find Yahoo Go to be quite useful.
The N95 has a great camera (I've benchmarked it against the 5MP Sony Ericsson and Samsung offerings - Nokia wins); the inbuilt mail client is good; the browser is OK but keep the cache clear; I sync with Evolution for Calendar using Bluetooth on Ubuntu). Get an extended battery if you don't like the existing 950mAh (makes the phone fat but it's worth upping the capacity by x2).
When you update firmware - backup first! Better to update firmware before installing apps. Keep the volume of material in your message inbox below 2 meg - the phone runs better. If you change product ID before firmware update, you'll never be able to change it again (just in case you want to de-brand). Orange have two access points: wap and internet, I think. Note that there is a 5MB single file limit on the wap access point :-)
Have fun!

IRC client (simple and straightforward) - http://mirggi.net/
Google Maps - http://www.google.com/mobile/default/maps/index.html
JoikuSpot (transform your N95 to a Wifi hotspot!) - http://www.joikuspot.com/
Fring (MSN/Skype/etc...) - http://www.fring.com/
Putty (SSH client) - http://s2putty.sourceforge.net/
Calcium (great calculator) - http://mtvoid.com/calcium/
Widsets (lots of cool widgets) - http://www.widsets.com/

Putty is really great, for example I can start a torrent download at my home computer from anywhere and for instance have a movie ready for watching when I get home.

Check out nokia beta labs. A few nice apps are beta tested there.
