I tried to install Ubuntu Studios because i really want a multimedia-based linux. I've tried many others [including some non-multimedia ones] and they all do the same thing : i put the disk in, restart my system, and it just loads up as if there's no disk. This used to happen with Ubuntu 8.04 as well, but it just decided to work one day, so thats how i managed to install it. i thought it was my disk drive, but CDs seem to play and burn just fine..

any ideas?

You have to set your BIOS to boot from the CD first.

I'm having the same problem. I have a Toshiba U205 with Hardy 8.04. I have set BIOS to boot CD first but it spins up the CD then just loads Ubuntu normally. BTW, don't let your brother use your Ubuntu lappy without propper tutoring;)

Enter into the BIOS settings when your pc boots up.

Change the primary boot device to CD and secondary to your hard drive.

Cheers !
