I have my wireless router upstairs, but my ubuntu desktop down stairs. I can't be bothered to buy a wireless adapter for my desktop, but i have a windows XP laptop that has a wireless card. I installed a proxy on it and linked them together with networking cables. I then put the settings on my ubuntu, opened up the internet but got a Proxy Server Refused Connection error!

any help appreciated.
P.S., i can't move the PC, it has to stay downstairs!

I don't know what you're using for a proxy server on XP, but maybe you could just use Internet connection sharing.

You might also try bridging the connections in XP.
