getdeb.net, a leading provider of new and updated programs for Ubuntu is announcing the start of a gaming repository for Ubuntu. The repository (codenamed "Playbuntu") will provide all games available on getdeb.net in an easy to use repository format - enabling you to receive updates for your favourite game via the Update Manager tool. Additonally, if a game has several packages, installing them is quite easy as it'll be automatically handled.

Why can't they make an official repo of all their programs?

Why can't they make an official repo of all their programs?

They will go out of business if nobody actually visits their site

Heh, for one - they aren't in business, more like scraping enough ad money for pay for hosting. In order this happen, they need either mirrors or donations.

And a mirror for all programs would not be a good idea - there is a reason why Ubuntu doesn't ship with the latest versions of programs. Making a repository for them would be quite counter-productive. However games are different - each one definitely brings wanted features, and you can't even play some games if they're an older version (like online ones, client/server version mismatch).

I find Alien Arena's page amusing:
http://getdeb.net/app/Alien+Arena+2007

The latest version of the game is indeed 7.10, but since version 7.00 it's now called Alien Arena 2008.

Alien Arena 2007 v. 7.10 is an oxymoron.

are the getdeb.net team trustworthy? I haven't used their repositories yet...

I don't think they have a repository just yet. What they do is compile source code for people who can't or don't want to. It's helped me out several times. As for their trustworthiness, I'm fine using a deb of theirs, I've never had a problem.

You're welcome to get the sources for the .debs they used (the orig.tar.gz) files or whatever if you're unsure.

Or just not use it and compile your own, this is a volutary service.

Yes, I would say they are. When I was still using Ubuntu I used their packages without any issues. If they were'nt trustworthy you would have know about it by now.
