I'm using a LG W2252TQ monitor. I was using 1680X1050 resolution. I followed the 'multimedia How-to' as I have done before. But this time I end up with the highest resolution available being only 1280x1024.

As for why the application buttons at the bottom of the screen being gone, I found that the color was changed so that they blended into the background. This obviously was related to the resolution problem as they both happened at the same time.

Any idea why this is and what I can do about it?

If I'm not mistaken, I recieved a message somewhere which stated that I needed to install a nvidia driver, which is what I did. I am sure it was 'nvidia-glx'. It was immediately after I install this that I realized that I could not have a full resolution setting of 1680X1050.
Any ideas whats wrong?

May or may not help, but you might want to troubleshoot along the lines I did in this thread:
