Hi,
first of all, I'm new around here, so welcome everyone ;)
I've been a Gentoo user for quite some time, but I've been more and more fed up with it, so recently I installed Kubuntu - along with KDE 4.1 with no problems. However, one thing I noticed and disliked is that most packages are very old - ffmpeg and related stuff from early 2007 is really out of the question for me (also, kchekgmail was so old that it no longer worked with todays gmail).
So I tried compiling ffmpeg from source using 'checkinstall' - and here is my problem: how are package version in (k)ubuntu resolved? It seems awkward that for example "0.svn20071224-0.0ubuntu1" (this is actually x264) is considered newer than "20080808-1"
