Installs fine...then i try to boot and the cpu turns off

Hi all - I am surprised to be having this problem...I've tried to boot ubuntu 8.04 64 bit and 32 bit a couple of different ways at this point: through the WUBI installer and the LiveCd, however, I keep having the same problem: Once i get past grub, i get a message that the kernel is alive, and then my computer shuts off.

I have no idea what to do...i really need to get out of vista!

I think your hard drive sectors are corrupted ... you could do fsck using a live cd and then perhaps install again.
