I was just downloading a torrent, using Opera as the downloader.
And my internet is 4Mbps.
Which, in real terms - about 400kb/s

How the hell, is this torrent downloading at 700kb/s+ ?
It was at 1100 a minute ago, but I didnt' screen it then.

Are you sure you have your conversions correct?

Mbps != MBps
Kbps != KBps

Notice the case of the letter "b" in the two examples.

The speed limit is usually enforced by the ISP, not a physical limit. Once i downloaded a linux dvd image at twice the max speed and as I understood the ISP was doing some tweaks that day and by mistake dropped all the limits.

I`ve seen similar anomalies on both our connections at times.
I`ve had our 1Mb line download at nearly 3Mb and the 20Mb line download at anything up to 35Mbs.
It`s only ever happened with multi-threaded download managers such as Down Them All or indeed Torrent apps like Deluge & Ktorent and it`s never been a sustained speed.

Well we have 4 Mega BIT broadband.
But, the real download rate maxes at about 420 Kilo BYTES.
This was going 700 Kilo BYTES ++

That nothing, I've have a 384Kbps line (superfast for south africa) that downloads at 12KB/s... oh, wait, nevermind...

I'm so envious of you guys with your 4Mbps lines and no monthly limit!

Nah, most of the deals in my country (UK) are not unlimited.
Normally limited to 4-5GB a month.
I'd use that in a week =/
Luckily though, we got our one .. and it's quite cheap at £12 a month (:
