Would be great if you can also mention for what purpose you have it. Just thought it would be interesting to know.

Have a Debian Etch host, running VMware Server, servicing 2 VM's constantly,

Ubuntu Server 7.10 Mailserver
Ubuntu Server 7.10 Webserver
W2003 for various reasons, mainly testing and sometimes specific VPN sessions.

On my laptop I run Hardy Heron servicing 2 VM's using Vbox.

One Vista, for work and compatibility testing and iTunes
Ibex VM for testing

Gaming in a VM?

It doesn't support direct X.

If it should, I could do away with my 30gb xp install.

I use it for old games, UFO enemy unknown, baldurs gate etc. Ones that don't use directX, although honestly I havn't booted it in a long time.

Maybe you should try VMWare Server.

I wonder if VMWare Fusion will make it to linux. From what I understand it has 3D suppport.

VMWare Server currently has 3d capability with a W2kPro or Xp Guest, link in my last post.

Er.... The original question does not look too specific....

1. On my personal laptop I have an winXP hosting vmWare server, on which I run different winXP/winServer2003/ubuntu 8.04 desktop/ubuntu 8.04 server/ubuntu 8.04 jeos clients. When I last had time to experiment with Ubuntu, there were up to three VMs running at once.

2. There's a winXP box once used as file server. Now it has vmWare server hosting a single windows 2003 server hosting Oracle 10. And yes, it still hosts some 300 Gb of files.

3. There's a dedicated Ubuntu Server 8.04 box used solely for hosting virtual machines. Right now there are five Windows 2003 Servers and a single Windows XP.

I run Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, Windows Vista Ultimate (Boot Camp), and Ubuntu 8.04.1 in VMware Fusion.
