I am hoping to use Ubuntu on a computer that I am using but do not own by installing the OS on an external hard drive. I tried this through the normal method and it did not work. Is there a special way this must be done or is it not plausible?

Links or instructions would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, it might just be easier to replace the internal hard drive with another. This won't make Windows on the local hard drive not boot, will it?
