Now that there's Launchy for Linux that works just like in Windows, which do you prefer and why?

Gnome-do's latest beta release (http://jassmith.wordpress.com/2008/07/27/announcing-gnome-do-0597-spirited-runner/) is incredible.

Does Launchy have even remotly as many Linux specific plugins as Do has? I mean you can basically build your own time-warp-tunnel with that thing.

Just curious as I have never used Launchy before, so I wonder how the two compare feature-wise.

Have they fixed the startup thingy with Do and Compiz? I always forget it when I have to start it manually..

Katapult on KDE ;)

I was going to make a thread about this too. :p

Anyways after trying both out, I think I like Gnome-do better. Launchy is nice but Gnome-Do is just more Gnomey.
And I think it's true that a lot of Launchy's features are Windows specific.

For Windows, hehe ;-)

I'm using Launchy because I use KDE. Launchy just fits better into KDE, and I dont have mono installed either. Katapult would be an alternative, but it has a serious design flaw (at least for me), so now I stick to Launchy, works great.

I use Gnome Do. I have been using Gnome Do since I started using Linux and I never found Launchy to work on Windows as I wanted it to. Gnome Do is faster, more integrated and turns up the results I want. If Launchy works exactly as the Windows version then I don't want it.

Neither. I don't really understand how to use them and don't have the time to learn how to use them.

I've been using do since .4 and it's only getting better with each release. 0.6 is right around the corner and should be done before Intrepid. If you haven't used Do since the 0.4 (the version included in Hardy's repos) you should definitely take another look.

well, first you sudo apt-get install gnome-do
then you try super+space (i meant the windows key).
after some time, you'll have forgotten alt+f2, the menu (alt+f1), the terminal...

The time you save by using GNOME Do or Launchy quickly makes up for the 5 minutes that it takes to learn how they work... =D> Why did you bother to reply on this post at all if you're not interested in these tools?

I'm using GNOME Do and I love it. I didn't know Launchy. I'm going to try it on my Windows system first.

The only problem with gnome-do, is when you are forced to use a windows machine (school or something) and you thing, right, I will check what that word means, you hit super+space, and nothing happens.
grrr.

I just use ALT+F2. I used Launchy all the times when I ran Windows, though.

Lol, yeah, I have both Launchy and GNOME Do installed. I tried them because their interfaces look good (similar to Quicksilver). But I failed and had other stuff to do, so now they're just sitting in my application menu.

Now I'm using Launchy but I prefer Gnome-Do, I think it looks better than launchy. The (big) problem with gnome-do is the memory usage (with the files and folders plugin about 40MB after several uses).
And the problem I found in Launchy in Linux is that I can't find the way to add hidden files and folders to the catalog, someone knows something about that? I tried adding ".*/" as file type but it doesn't work.

I've gone back to Deskbar for now. A few must-have features from it:

-Feels more like a search engine; particularly with live Beagle or Tracker searches. I can type something and see piles of related results. Actual operations to run on files are guessed for me, which is different from Do's design. I like how that fits with its focus on bookmarks and search shortcuts (eg: the Devhelp plugin).

-Search field is automatically populated with X selection, which is great for looking things up!

-Plugin updater is not broken. (Rather, not there). Sounds like they are working on it, but I for one am still waiting for GNOME Do to fix that; right now it wants to update a bunch of plugins but just hangs when I tell it to do so.

There is a big problem with Launchy in KDE at the moment:
https://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=2210686&forum_id=827410
In a nutshell, Launchy cannot properly launch shortcuts with additional parameters defined in them (DigiKam for example).
