I imagine you already installed the latest build-essential
Tell me the steps you take in the Virtual Terminal

you can't rollback...and I doubt the partitions themselves are the problem.

You might try the latest driver ('.12'):

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_173.14.12.html

alt+ctrl+F1

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

cd /path/to/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.12-pkg2.run

sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.12-pkg2.run --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/
linux-headers-2.6.24-20-generic

If it installs, run

sudo nvidia-xconfig

sudo apt-get install nvidia-settings

sudo reboot

If you can get to the desktop but the screen settings are off, run

sudo nvidia-settings

sorry, typo/wrong page:

x86:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_173.14.12.html

But on second glance your problem appears to be a gcc mismatch...What is the output of these two commands:

cat /proc/version

gcc -v

(the first tells what version was used to compile the kernel, the second what
you are cuurently using--you have to build the nvidia kernel interface using the same gcc version
as the first)

Both are GCC 4 releases...since it's only a difference between the .2.3 and .3.1, you could try the 'ignore' option:

sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.12-pkg2.run --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/
linux-headers-2.6.24-20-generic --no-cc-version-check

for more info see:

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.12-pkg2.run --advanced-options

&

http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/173.14.12/README/chapter-08.html

If none of that works, try the automatic route (EnvyNG (http://www.albertomilone.com/envyngfaq.html#A))
