So I am finally using Ubuntu exclusively on my laptop and rockbox on my iPod. Now i would like an mp3 management program to organize and tag my collection of music. Does anyone have any suggestion or will the file browser work just fine?

I think Amarok (http://amarok.kde.org/) would probably be the best way to go.

Exaile is also worth trying.

I would avoid amarok on ubuntu because it will look horrible.

The ones that are itunes like are:

exaile, banshee, songbird.

Bmpx is also a good one.

If you are looking for the opposite of an itunes like music player, try mpd and sonata.

Try Songbird first. I uses the firefox engine and a native version is available for Linux and windows.
The new version 0.7RC1 is as good as or better then iTunes already.
You may want to use 0.6 until 0.7 is officially released.
It's already better then WinAmp(yes the new one with Bento).

No it won't. Just install KControl and theme all your KDE apps however you want =] So yeah, use Amarok, it's the best player by far.

My sugestion is aTunes, a java based player. it has a good gui and the backend is mplayer. its a bit heavy as its a java player. but this is my choice.

will any of these players play music purchased from the itunes store?

also, can you purchase any music from itunes and/or subscribe to podcasts found in the itunes directories via these players?

Rhythmbox has links to Magnatude and Jamendo for storefronts.

I don't know about podcasts yet, as that's my current focus as well.

Good luck! I'll come back if I find more info.

I did find this (http://cybernetnews.com/2007/10/09/gpodder-a-full-featured-podcast-client-for-linux/). This is in no way an endorsement from me, as I've yet to test it out, but I did figure it was worthy of mention.

No, unfortunately. I recommend using doubleTwist while in Windows to convert all of the m4p's to mp3's (but this may not be legal in your area), or look into some of the work being done to run iTunes effectively under Wine.

Just seen this thread. I am new to ubuntu - do these exaile, banshee, songbird work like itunes on ones computer - i.e. can one manage one's ipod music with them? Does one need different software on the ipod? Any advice would be appreciated.

Install Songbird, is the best. I'm iTunes fan and Songbird is near iTunes.
