I don't know anything about PC's but I don't like big brother gates running the world so I'm here. And here is: I down loaded ubuntu 8.01, I tried to burn it and it stopped the burn half way through. What I would like to know is can I get this running with out a disk? As of right now I have ubuntu's download sitting on my XP desk top and am in need of very detailed step by step instructions on what to do next. Thanks for your help in advance

I guess you have 8.04 right? Not 8.01?

1.) Download and install iso recorder here:

http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm

Pick the correct one for your your flavor of windows.

2.) Insert a blank disk into you CD/DVD writer drive.

3.) Right-click on the ISO that is sitting on your desktop and choose the option that says something like "Copy Image to disk". It should be the first option. Once the program starts you will click next until it begins burning the disk.

4.) Once it tells you it is finished and spits out the disk, you will want to label this disk to make sure you know what is on it.

5.) Place the newly burned disk into the CD/DVD drive of the computer you want to install Ubuntu on.

6.) Turn on that computer, if it does not boot to the cd then you will want to turn off the computer. You can tell if it boots to the cd because the cd drive will start spinning quickly and in white text it will say 'isolinux' and starting pouring down white text. If the computer booted to the Disk skip step 7.

7.) If your computer did not boot to the disk and you turned your computer off. You will want to start it again and hit either delete or f2. The goal is to get BIOS started. BIOS will be probably be a blue screen and only the keyboard will work. In the menus you will find something that says "Boot Device Priority" and make it so "CD/DVD..." is above "Hard Drive". Once you have done that be sure to save your settings and the computer should restart itself after saving settings and exiting.

8.) Eventually you will come to a screen that prompts you for your desired language... I would pick english, but to each their own (that is, if you are more comfortable in another language I would think they should all work the same).

9.) I would choose the "Try Ubuntu without affecting your hard drive" option as it is the first option.

10.) More stuff will happen and eventually you will come to a screen that looks exactly like ubuntu if you have ever seen it before. If not it will resemble Emperor Gates' desktop, but be very orange feeling rather than blue.

11.) It will be a little slow so be patient (you are running the operating system from a cd which is much slower than what you are accustomed to). Double-click on the 'Install' icon sitting on the desktop.

12.) You will essentially be doing exactly what is being asked of you on the screen. When the partitioner comes up it will ask you if you want to delete all partitions and use the entire disk for Ubuntu. That is probably the simplest option for a beginner, but it will erase everything from the hard drive so save your files.

13.) Just give it the information it is asking for and continue to hit next. Eventually it will ask you about a boot loader, generally you should just accept the defaults for everything unless you have a reason to do otherwise.

14.) The computer will spit out the disk and tell you to remove the disk and hit enter to restart. Do as it says...

15.) Ubuntu should boot up automagically on restart and you are done!

You could buy an ubuntu install disk for a nominal price or request a free one if you can't create a disk from the image. These options are available here:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu

This probably isn't the way you want to go but I just thought I'd throw it out there if the other options fail. Good luck! I really think you'll like Linux.

Does it have to be a dvd burner? I'm running a old Pentium 3. Thanks for your very detailed instructions!

I was having trouble with Internet Ex-deplorable when I consulted a friend who recomended fire fox. 2 mounths later I got a book For a gift from a family member(sure you heard of it), Little Brother. Out of curiosity I asked my fire fox friend about linux. He gave me a sly kinda of smile that almost reeked with pride as if a father watched his son become a man. Now I'm here without a clue. As soon as he told me about Ubuntu he offerd a disk. I want ot try to figure my issue out for exp-points but if I need a disk I'll get it from him. I'll try to avoid this because I don't want him to think he's taking off the training wheels.

If you use bit torrent, then it will do the md5sum for you, so you don't have to do it.

Torrent download is the way to go. Make sure you find the appropriate torrent file in the downloads of course, load into bit torrent and get the iso! (seems obvious but you never know). :)

Not sure what that means quite yet.

Oh, okay. This is the fruit then ...

1/ If you are using Windows, download a program called 'utorrent' (you will find it easily with a search). Install, it is tiny. Go to the list of Ubuntu downloads and search for the link that takes you to 'alternative downloads' or something along though lines. Link on the bottom of the main page I think (on main download page, then long blue list at the bottom of the linked page). You are looking to download the file that ends with 'iso.torrent' for your particular flavour (i386 or amd64). Download that.

2/ Open utorrent and to the top left of the screen, you will find a button which lets you add a torrent file (or just go 'file->add torrent'). Add your newly download 'ubuntu.iso.torrent' file. You will get a screen which lets you save the iso to a folder of your choice (and make a few other adjustments, but they shouldn't be needed).

Once you're done with that screen, hit okay, sit back and watch the action! You will see the iso coming down the line and be able to see at what speed (usually much faster than the conventional download).

3/ When the torrent is done, you will see it is 100% and is uploading only (always good manners and nice to share back - you will see a ratio indicator of how much you've shared back). The iso should be where you sent it. Burn that to a disk and you are ready to rock! Have fun and good luck ... :)

ps: reason I have suggested utorrent is it is probably the best at configuring your ports automatically for you, is extremely lightweight and I know it well!
