I am a complete newfie to the Linux world (and not much better in Windows).
I downloaded Ubuntu 8.04 to my XP. Good
I burned the ISO to a CD (I think)
I restarted my computer from the CD
I get the Ubunto logo.
I chose install from the CD.
This is part of what I get:

Busybox v1.1.3 (Debian 1.1.1.3-5 Ubuntu 12) built in shell (ash)

(initramfs)
[ 59.344851] at a2.00: exception Emask 0*0 SAct 0*0 SErr 0*0 action 0*2 frozen

and then more lines pretty much the same.

I burned another and another and another CD...same results.
I redownloaded the ISO from a different site.
The same results with the next 3 DDs

What am I doing wrong? I would hate to give up but am at a loss.
Appreciate any advice, please.
Thanks, Keith

Actually I didn't read the part where you said that you were using a Live CD. Sorry that solution doesnt apply for you. I'll try searching for another solution.

1) Did you md5sum the download?

2) Did you burn the iso at 4x or less?

3) Did you burn the iso as an iso?

Thanks,

1 md5sum the download, sorry, I don't know how to do this. My lack of knowledge is unbelieveable.

2. burn at 4x, yes my last burn was at this speed ( I have 10 coasters).

3. burn the ISO as AN ISO. I honestly tried every different ways to do the burn. But if I had burned ISO to ISO would I get The opening Obuntu screen and be asked did I want to boot from CD.

Please advice further,Thanks, Keith

To do the md5sum you need a program to check the hash encoded in the download. I use DigestIT from : http://www.kennethballard.com/modules/xproject/index.php?op=viewSummary&pid=2

I'm sure there are others. You compare the generated number with a number provided at the website.

I believe when you start the live cd there is an option to check the cd for defects. I'd try that to see if the cd is ok.

If you computer has low memory available you may need to look at a alt install disc. Its a command line installation, but not difficult. I managed to figure it out

I hope this helps

We have all started from the bottom.

Read these two websites for help:

How to Burn an ISO (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm)

I then bought the 32 bit Live and install edition from ShopLinuxOnline.com

I rebooted with the CD, I get exactly the same results as above.
Sorry, but I'm becoming totally frustrated. Is there a solution, again, please advise. Keith
