View Full Version : [xubuntu] How to get rid of all this Gnome in my Hardy install

Folks,
I just upgraded from 7.04 -> 7.10 -> 8.04.1 (why I couldn't do this in one step I'm not sure, but I digress). Anyway, it seems that 7.10 and 8.04.1 have lots of Gnome-ish stuff. Like a lot. Maybe I'm just an old purist codger, but I want just a pure, straight up XFCE system.

How can I get rid of all this Gnome junk that is polluting my Hardy install?

eventhough you uninstall gnome, you still have gnome saved files and configurations files.

Thanks Cresho,
Are you saying that I need to reinstall from the Xubuntu base (that the upgrade process introduced the Gnome libraries/apps/etc)?

Have a look here (http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce), it has all the info you need.

Xubuntu includes many gnome tools by default behind the scenes because they do a good job at what they do. My advice, if you want nothing to do with gnome, would be to download either an Ubuntu Server image, or an Ubuntu JeOS (Just enough OS) image and then install the XFCE xserver and XFCE base stuff. This will give you Ubuntu under the hood and pure XFCE on the screen!

-- edit -- I would really recommend the server over JeOS because there are a whole lot of things left out of JeOS.

Jimmy,
I've had bad luck installing the server (although I am familiar with the concept of doing a minimal install and installing the WM of choice on top of that).

I suppose my issue is this; 7.04 had no perceptible Gnome, 7.10 and 8.04 seem to be saturated. In 7.04, I consciously steered away from installing other apps that required additional Gnome libraries. I suppose I just want to get back to that 7.04 mindset.

Regards,
Jed
