View Full Version : [ubuntu] [SOLVED] enable video drivers/ enable audio device

Hi all. I just installed Ubuntu 8.04.1, have installed the "automatic updates" and all is well except for a few things.

One problem is that Ubuntu didn't seem to "see" that I have an ATI Radeon x1600 so it's not prompting me to use the proprietary drivers, or to enable them. I went into Hardware Drivers to enable them but there's nothing there. If I install the ATI drivers from the ATI web site will that work or is something just missing?

The other problem has to do with sound. The speaker icon by the clock has a red line through it. When I try to open it I'm told that no audio device was found. How do I remedy that problem?

This is the second time I've installed Ubuntu 8.04.1 in the last 24 hours. The first time everything worked. I was prompted to use the proprietary video drivers and the sound worked right off the bat. This time, no such luck.

Any ideas on how to fix both problems?

To solve this I reinstalled the OS.
