gnome panel question about Apps/Places/System etc.

On the default Ubuntu setup, you have two panels on the top and bottom. On the top panel there are Apps/Places/System. I want to keep these menus because they are useful, but could I get them to use a small icon instead of text? Thanks for any help.

Im not too sure you can do this easily, you can increase/decrease the size of the panel and change the icon next to applications.

There is the main menu applet which is the apps menu with places and system included as sub-menus, all under a single icon. Right-click on the panel and hit "Add to Panel" and select main menu from the list.
